First review this IFIXIT guide: iMac Intel 27" EMC 2639 CPU Replacement. While it is possible to remove it is not something I would recommend as the difference between the i5 and i7 chips is not enough gain given the risks here.

Apple marks the chip with a seal so if you do replace it, Apple will not offer warranty for your system! Your AppleCare service agreement is also voided!

I also must warn you the newer 'Thin Series' iMac's are a bear to open if you don't use the correct tools and follow the IFIXIT guides to the letter you will likely damage your display which would be an expensive error!

Bottom line here: Don't do it its not worth it!

thank you Dan. In next week i will replace my hard drive segate 1tb by ssd Samsung 850 evo 500 GB. i'm afraid that my display will be damaged. in my country, we can only have owc tool. may i use The kit includes OWC in-line digital thermal sensor cable, screen pick, and screen adhesives to replace my storage.

ANW, thank you very much for guide me to tear down. hope that nothing 'll go wrong. pray!!

I would recommend you look at installing a blade SSD unit and then convert the two drives to a Fusion Drive. While more work you'll gain more performance than swapping out your SATA HD for a SATA SSD.

Unfortunately no.

The desktop version of the i7 4790 is different from the one installed in your iMac.

All apple computers uses a M version of the processor which are smaller and from what I know non-upgradeable.

If you have AppleCare, they will see you have opened the iMac, but they should be able to help. They'll charge a certain fee, but at least your computer will be working again!

Good luck!

Thaipl1991

If you even OPEN the iMac it voids the ability for any Apple Service provider to service you mac. iMacs do not have any DIY replaceable parts with the exception of RAM

Bruno is misinformed. The 2013 iMacs don't use "M" processors.

You can voluntarily do whatever you want, providing you follow meticulous instructions. Actually not hard at all if you have any building experience. It’s going to void apple care so what it’s cheaper to buy parts break the computer in process then buy more parts and still pay less than apple care lol
