How to recognise 3GS from 3G display?

I bought a replacement LCD for my 3G, but instead of seeing anything, I see just horizontal and vertical lines (while the phone 100% runs, I hear ringing, I can connect to iTunes...).

Plus, while the connector is very similar, it doesn't hold very much on the logic board and if I move a little with the display, the cable is out.

My first LCD still works on the same phone, but with no backlight. (which was the reason why I wanted to replace it)

My suspicion is they sent me 3GS instead of 3G LCD. Is there any way to tell them apart?

The ZIF connector of the 3G and 3GS displays are different. The connector for the 3G has a small plastic rectangular piece in the center of it while the 3GS does not.

If you look at this photo of a 3G display, the connector has no piece of plastic in the center of it.

This picture of a 3GS display shows the rectangular piece of plastic in the center of the ZIF connector.

hm... so it seems I really have 3G....

I made a picture to be sure - http://imgur.com/t7WG4.jpg - your answer would imply it's 3G.

That is a 3G connector

Oh, OK. So, either the display itself is faulty, or I destroyed it somehow while maneuvering with it. How easy is to break LCD while sticking it to the construction and then putting it to iPhone? I think I was extra careful (I know, it's probably for another question)

Look for a bent, gold lead on the logic board. Bent leads can cause problems with displays. The connector on the panel itself looks like it is intact judging from the picture you posted. If everything looks ok, then contact iFixit customer support (support@ifixit.com) and we can set up a return for you and get a new panel out to you. Reference this Answer in your email.

The LCD was not bought on iFixit, you don't send to my country (Czech Republic) :-( or, at least, didn't when I last checked.
