Why will my iPad Air not restore?

I have hooked the iPad Air up to my computer and it says I need to erase it and restore it. I have tried this and keep getting error codes. I called apple and they said I need to send it in and the repair will cost approximately $300. Is there a way I can fix it myself?

Had the same issue, tried the solution about 8 times... with no sucess, and then.. it worked. Just saying because some people are saying it is not repairabel. After 3 days trying mine came back to live. So if you really need the iPad do keep trying, even if it doesn't work at first in my case it solved itself. I have to believe this has to do with batery problems

I’ve tried holding down the home button and power button many times and the connect to iTunes icon won’t show up at all

My guess is that this is corrupted NAND and is not repairable. Something happens that damages the NAND for no reason, and then it can't function. It is similar conceptually to a hard drive failure on a computer out of the blue.

New battery will NOT solve this issue.

Has anything happened to the iPad? Recent drops? Recent repairs? What error codes are you seeing?

Follow these steps and report back:

Plug your iPad into your computer. Hold down the power button for 5 seconds, while holding the power button, hold down the home button for 15 seconds. When the Apple logo appears, release the power button until the "Connect to iTunes" screen shows up. Restore from there.

If that fails:

Plug your iPad into your computer. Turn it off. Once its off, hold down power and home buttons for 10 seconds, then release the power button. Your screen will still be dark but your computer should let you know that it sees your phone. Restore from there.

Please let me know if that does or does not work. Also update if there has been recent repair or damage.

I'm in the same boat, hoping you can help. I'm getting the error 1014. I can't get anything to appear on the screen at all, even after holding in home and power buttons. I've tried restoring from 3 different computers, all get the same error.

It had not been dropped or gotten wet. I didn't write the error codes down, but I did share them with the apple rep and she seemed to think it was a hardware issue. She couldn't tell me exactly what, though. My computer recognizes it, but the screen will not come on no matter what I do. I've tried holding down the home and power buttons both while connected and disconnected. It says to erase and restore it, but I've tried this 6 or 7 times and every time it's almost finished restoring, it says it's unable to restore.

I have the Ipad Air that not able to restore too. Itunes dectect in Recovery mode, so I restore and update. Itune send the image to Ipad and I see the progress bar going but until the end the Ipad went back black screen again and into recovery mode. Before this, my ipad won't hold charge and shutdown. Will this cause by bad battery?

Thanks

Would love to know the answer to this too. I had two that started with the following symptoms:

1) device would start to charge battery icon - for weeks

2A) One after constant charging came back to life with me sitting there alternating between off button and home button - its alive but has poor battery life

2B) the second one now has no battery indication and is black screen. Itunes see's it in recovery mode, I can restore it but the restore bar shows progress but disappears just before it finishes. logs say that it is done. Battery condition is 0. Recovery loop begins all over again.

Both devices we used on a charging trolley with IQ16 (different name in other countries or re-badges) charge station.

Time to pop the hood and have a look. I going to guess a battery, just need to buy one. I have done plenty of minis but not airs. is the Glass hard to pull?

I have an iPad Air 2 and tried to update to the newest version iOS version 11.2.1. After several attempts at updating the iPad, I decided (regretfully) to do a full version restore back to factory settings. This has resulted in 10-12 attempts to restore and/or update the iPad via iTunes on my MacBook Air (which had to be factory reset as well, partly due packing too much memory into the 128G hard drive. I also tried updating iTunes on the MacBook, but could not update with 0 KB. Did restore MacBook Air and I am hopeful I will find a way to restore the iPad, if not I have an ASUS Transformer tablet (ughh!!)

I hate updates to be honest and I decided to do the same thing (version 11.2.1). It did not take the update and further more, cannot reset back to factory settings.

So far, I have tried to restore about 10 times and no luck....:(

This is BS on all accounts APPLE should fix or replace I have shelved my IPAD AIR 2 that was not cheep for over a year and here I am back at it again spending countless hours looking up how to fix downloading stupid non fixable sites that promise to help, I burnt out. NO ONE ACTUALLY HAS THE FIX OR THE %#*@ ANSWER. I say we all put complaints in and overload with them with this responsibility of fixing this issue any other company would gladly replace at no charge.

I have an iPad Air 2 which was locked due to a pupil putting the incorrect password in too often. I tried numerous times to recover it but it always told me that it could not be detected. After reading all your comments above I decided to contact Apple but needed as much information about the device as possible so kept putting it into recovery mode so that I could get the serial number etc off of iTunes.

As if by a miracle after starting the recovery session for a third time it decided to recover. I wasn’t able to restore the previous settings as they were probably never saved to iTunes or iCloud, but at least I now have a functioning iPad.

The Apple website explains that this problem can result from a faulty USB connection. They suggest that you try restoring with: 1. a different USB cable, or 2. a different USB port, or 3. a different computer.

When I had the same problem I tried a different USB port, and that solved it.

Just overcome this problem. Key step is that you need to download the latest firmware version of the device onto your hard drive . With some reason iTunes seems to forget old models of iPad and iPhone. Restore button on iTunes is for recent models only.

With the right firmware version on your hard drive, before clicking restore button, you need to press and hold “Shift” then click “Restore iPad”. It will bring you to file explorer. You browse to location of the downloaded firmware. Then click the firmware file, and click OK. iTunes then will restore your device with your saved firmware. Be mindful that you iTunes will not allow a restore to lower version than your latest one. If the process fails, I suggest you may download another version and try again. Hope this helps.
