Start up from your system installation disk by inserting the disk and holding down the "C" key while restarting. Go to the second page pull dow menu to Utilities -> disk utilities and format the drive, then install the system.

and connectors. The connectors will pull off the board if handled roughly. Put the HD in an external case to check it.

I've seen three 14" iBook G4s with a HD recognition problem, but it wasn't the ones with the ribbon cables that wrap around to the bottom of the logic board (those sometimes pop out but it's easy to push them back in again), it's the ones with the HD cable connector that sits on top so that the drive drops directly into the connector "slots".
I've carefully checked the tines on the drives (none bent or broken) and the connections in the connector "cradle" and tried two or three drives in each machine with this problem. Everything else about each computer works: DVD drive, bootup to CD, sound, graphics, etc., but the computer does not recognize the hard drive either in the OS install or in Disk Utility.
Could there be a drive control or power circuit that's at fault? Or a bad connection between the cradle and the logic board?
