Replaced Logic Board but does not work. (Water damaged phone)

Hey Guys!

My friend has dropped his phone in Turkey and after that he putted it directly in a bag of rise. After 6 days in the bag, it still wont work. I have replaced the Logic Board because i saw on the 'Power IC' that it has some burned bubbles coming up like this -->

But after the replacement.. It still not working! I have tested the screen with a test flex cable on a different iphone, and the screen works...

Can you help me please? :D

Thanks in advanced!

Kindly Regards,

Update (08/24/2015)

Dear OldTurkey03,

Thanks for the fast response!

I have already done that before, that's why i bought a new logic board, because i thought the logic board has been fried from the Power IC, after that yesterday i checked what Mr. Kyle Halvorson did, and indeed! It has some corrosion aswel on the Charge Port, so i cleaned it with Isopropyl alcohol, let it dry and put back in, but as you already mentioned before.. i have bought a new battery from Ifixit to try if this works! (Hopefully) :( . Otherwise i really dont know what could be else broken.

Hey guys,

I have received today my new battery for the iphone 4... I putted in, but did not work... I think its the power on - off cable that may be broken? But how do you check that?

- de

If power on/off flex is broken or you think it is you can unplug it and power it on through the charging port using a USB cable. This should make the phone come on just for future reference.

Hey Guys!

Finally found the problem!

It was the Power/Sensor Flex Cable!!!

How i found it? Well by you guys! So i tested the motherboard with only the battery or/and the power cable attached.

And it Started up! Ok so i tested it with the broken Power / Sensor cable. I pushed the power button and nothing started up ! So that's how i knew that it was the Power / Sensor cable. I replaced it with a new one from Ifixit.com (Europe) And it started up!!!! :D Just like new!!! Thanks guys for helping me! :D

yoenes pattyn, I am a bit confused. Correct me if I am wrong. The phone is a water damaged phone. you replaced the logic board and it still does not work. Let's not worry about U2 on the other board. what does concern me is the Rice. Rice has absolutely no value in this. Placing a water damaged device in rice is about the same as doing nothing. The very first thing I do suggest is that you stop using the device, (remove the battery) and totally disassemble it, follow the guides on here. Then clean it with +90% isopropyl alcohol. This will displace the water and stop corrosion. It it okay to submerge a board in isopropyl alcohol. Here is a guide for that. Even so it was written for a 3G, the procedure is still the same. After that, air dry all the components. Do not forget to clean the connectors on the board as well as the cables. Then re-assemble with a new battery. This is not optional but a must to avoid failure later on. Water damage is the toughest to trouble shoot and to repair. Hope this helps, good luck.

I second everything oldturkey03 says as well as check the charge port. It may have corrosion in it or a piece of rice stuck in preventing the charger from going in all the way.

Try the new motherboard only with screen plugged in and a KNOWN CHARGED WORKING battery. You can also try a new charging port as it could be that no power is getting to the board. However if after making sure you are powering the board somehow and with that working screen you already tested, the phone doesn't come on, that means you have a bad logic board. Warranty it!

Hey Israel! Thanks for helping me! But unfortunately it didn't work! What i have done is checking the battery first and it hits 4.04 Volts. So that's a good battery right? what i did as you already said is, only the battery and the screen. So i plugged out the front camera connector, audio control connector, back camera connector and the charger/data connector. Tried to turn it on... Nothing.

It seems like you have a bad motherboard, get a replacement as warranty from seller!

Hey Guys! I have found it! Well i think i have it! Look! So i tested the new motherboard only with the power cable attached and ofcourse the lcd and touchscreen to. When i power it on via the power cable into the dock connector it shows the apple startup screen but refreshes the whole time. I dont know if it's right or not. But i'm half happy that the motherboard works! So beside that. I think that the power / sensor flex cable has been broken? Could that be the issue?

Thanks in advanced ! :D

Posted this yesterday above: "

If power on/off flex is broken or you think it is you can unplug it and power it on through the charging port using a USB cable. This should make the phone come on just for future reference."

Insert a new battery and see if that helps. The logic board should come on with a known good battery
