Speaker not working after changing dock connector

A few days ago, I started getting the message "Charging is not supported with this accessory" when plugged into my (third party) car charger. Got home, tried my Apple mains charger, and I got the same message.

So today I replaced the dock connector. Put it all back together, and everything seemed good: the cell reception and WiFi are fine, and it is charging perfectly. Even the home button is operating just fine. However, it seems that the speaker is not working. Also, when I take a call, the caller's voice is fine in my earpiece, but my voice is extremely faint and muffled in theirs.

I can see how I may have twisted the rubber mic tube when I was re-installing... but the speaker? Everything seemed to go back together well, and I didn't force anything. Any ideas, hints or tips before I tear it all apart and try again? And do you think I'll need another new dock connector, or will the (new) one I put in today survive another disturbance?

Okay, I have fixed it. Turns out that the new dock connector (sold to me as an original part, but I don't know any way of checking this) was badly manufactured: there was a big dollop of glue on one end of one of the contact pads which the speaker unit connects to. The fingers making this connection come down at quite an oblique angle, and the glue would have been raising one of them off the pad.

As for the muffled speech capture, again another bit of poor manufacture: the ribbon out to the mic assembly was too long. I just put a kink in it and aligned the mic properly. All done!

I was quoted $199 by a repair shop just to replace the battery; any repair beyond that didn't interest them: they would only offer a "new" (i.e. refurbished) phone in exchange for $309. My fix cost me $13 for a new dock connector, including free ( cheap quality, but functional) tools to complete the job.

Thanks to ifixit for all their (free) information, without which I never would have even attempted this!
