troubleshooting - smart sense

my dad just bought the new samsung galaxy tab a and we are having some issues with the smart sense -- the feature that recognizes your looking at it and stays on - turns off when you look away, etc. the feature is turned off, but it continues to "work". he likes to lay the tablet down to type - and after a few it turns off - thinking it isn't being used.

how do we fix it?
