GE Potscrubber Quiet Power 1 model GSC3400ZBL loose screw

Recently the dishwasher started rattling/buzzing. The noise is very much like something is loose and vibrating/hitting something else. The only thing we could find was a screw and nut in the bottom of the tub. They both have a good deal of hard water residue on them from over the years, so they come from somewhere in the actual tub. The screw is similar in size to the ones holding the wheels on the top rack. It is flat ended and has a nut.

After a long time trying to find where it comes from/what it holds, we are asking for help. It is apparent that we just need to put it back to fix the issue, but I cannot find at all where it comes from.

I've been searching for exploded diagrams of the machine, some of which GE has on their site, but cannot pinpoint where this particular screw is from.

The washer appears to be cycling water correctly, the trap is cleaned out, everything seems to be working fine, except for the very loud rattling/buzzing of something loose that shouldn't be.

Does anyone have any suggestions? or perhaps know where a screw and nut SHOULD be in the machine so I can check to see if they are missing?

That noise you're hearing tells me that there is most likely something down in the sump that the pump impeller or soft food macerator is grinding against. You will have to disassemble the sump to get down to the pump impeller and remove the offending debris. If you still have a lot of hard water deposits after you find the offending debris and reassemble things, you can clean out the deposits quite effectively with muriatic acid. Start with an EMPTY dishwasher, start it and let it run through the short prewash cycle, let it refill with water and start running again, then open the door and very carefully and slowly pour about 1 cup of the muriatic acid into the water, close the door, and let it run full cycle. The mineral deposits will be gone and the inside of the dishwasher will look like new. For those with stainless steel tubs, go VERY light on the acid or you will not be very happy with the nice brown tint that the stainless will have after . You haven't lived until you have had to hand polish the entire interior of a stainless tub on a unit that was being picked up the next day.(been there, done that)

You should never put anything in a dishwasher that is poisonous to humans!

Distilled white vinegar will dissolve water deposits and is completely safe to use in dishwashers, washers, coffee pots etc.

Add 1/3 gal to dishwasher. Let it sit at least one hour. Place 2 cups on top rack, fill cups with vinegar and start the dishwasher on normal wash cycle. Do this once a month to extend the life of your dishwasher.

There is not a screw with a nut use in the dishwasher. It most likely came from a pot handle or lid.
