satellite c600 memory upgrade
After adding second 4g ram card, windows 7 fails to start up. Should I have changed any bios data or other parameters.

Did you ensure the ram was the same speed and type?
Ive seen faulty Ram cause windows loading issues.
Also are you on a 64 bit version of windows?

Ah! a major fail on my part, I did not look inside until I had bought the ram card, thought it was a fairly straightforward operation. More detail required I guess. Yes I am running 64 bit version. Thanks for your input.

The most likely reason is because the laptop is not compatible with the new memory or both RAMs can't work together.
In order to diagnose the problem, try to boot the laptop with just the new memory plugged in. If the laptop boots, then the trouble is that the old and the new memory don't get along. If the laptop doesn't boot, then is just that the new memory is not compatible with your laptop (because of the FSB or something).
The easiest way to avoid these kind of problems in RAM upgrades is buying exactly the same type of RAM that the one you have already working (the sticker attached to the memory will give you the parameters needed).

Thanks for that felix, I can see the storm coming now. I may try the substitution but either way I seem to have a mismatch darn it. Back to the drawing board.

Far as I recall the 660 states it supports up to 8Gb Ram. I placed an extra 4Gb in mine bringing it up to 6 and it works fine. Perhaps swapping the modules around or try running laptop with just the new RAM first. mind you I imagine you would most likely have tried this already.
Failing which, it is entirely possible you may have a dud Dimm. Updating the bios which hasn't been changed for ages cos the 660 is an old model may or may not make a difference depending on how old your current bios is. As a footnote to this, always read what bios improvements/changes are listed in the readme accompanying the bios. So don't update the bios for the sake of it as although bioses and the procedure to update them are far more stable today than they ever have been you can still screw things up if you don't know what you are doing.
Luckily, so far I've never messed up a bios in the 25 years of working with PC's but it can happen to the best of us.

It fails to startup because your system can hold a maximum of 4GB.
Maximum of 2GB can be inserted in each of the slots.

Thank you all for your comments. I have since gone for a 2Gb upgrade to a total of 6Gb and all is well. I think the error came from an own goal in so much that in my original upgrade to 8Gb I simply ordered a 4Gb module for a c660/660D, and I was sent a c660-2F2 which was probably a mismatch. Looking more closely at the spec I should have ordered a c660-1LD, but to play safe and not push the 8Gb limit of the machine I went for the correct 2Gb module in the hope that there would be no cross module mismatch.
All seems to be working well now and the upgrade has at least given the machine more "room to play in" which appeared to be causing it to bog down some when I inspected the memory usage through the Task Manager prior to this.
My next step is to replace the disk with ssd maybe, when I have done a little more research into this op.
