Is my wife being ripped off by repair shop?

Hi guys. I'm looking for some advice. A couple of months ago my wife's phone screen went dark. Still usable, but everything was darker. I imagine this is what happens when you have a backlight problem, but not an expert.

Then last week the screen went off altogether and it appeared the phone wouldn't turn on. However I could connect it to my Mac and get the option enabled up in iTunes to back up the device. I couldn't actually back it up though, as there is a passcode on the phone and iTunes won't back up a device until you enter it. Without the screen I couldn't do this.

The phone also kept vibrating/beeping every few seconds. I read that this can signify an issue with the battery connection.

So my wife took it to our local independent repair shop to get it looked at. Several days later, they've said there's an issue with the screen which they'll replace, and they're taking the data off for her, which they're currently 20% through, and it will take several days for it to complete. They want about £140 GBP for the full service, of which about half is the data recovery part. The rest is the screen and diagnosis.

To my mind this doesn't stack up.... if the problem is screen or battery, why do they need to run a long data recovery process? Wouldn't the data stay intact if they repaired those issues? Secondly, can any data recovery with an 8gb phone really take days to perform, or are they just trying to make it sound like a bigger job than it really is?

If anyone with more knowledge of this than me could advise I'd appreciate your insight!

We do. But without the screen working we can't enter it!

Total bs. If you don't get your phone back in exact working condition, give them !&&*. And watch out for them trying to steal your info. Creeps

If I am honest, yes, this sounds like a complete rip off, what repair shop charges for taking some data off? I know I don't charge people to take data off the phone, 95% of the time, any repair you perform on an iPhone will not make you lose any data.

If it kept vibrating when connected to the computer or charging, this is more than likely an LCD issue, as usually when the LCD is damaged or disconnected and you try to charge it, it makes the charging noise every second or so, or vibration if it was silent.

if the battery was disconnected, your phone would not vibrate or power up for that matter.

If liquid damage had occurred then this can cause several issues.

I agree, you ARE being ripped off here. There's no reason they should be doing Data Recovery for you. Your data should still be on the phone and you should be able to access that yourself once the screen is replaced. It doesn't take much to replace the LCD on an iPhone either. The LCD screen costs around $60-$70 US Dollars, the only thing that remains is how much they charge for labor. Either way, they're charging way too much and they're trying to throw in data recovery to justify it when that's something you can do on your own at no cost to you.

It seems there is a way to unlock passcodes on iDevices, using a device which takes some time to run through all the possibilities. Still, something doesn't stick with this story. Either Nick is not grasping the issue (or it's not being explained correctly), or this guy is lying. So far, my bet is there's a scam or they botched the repair and they're trying to fix it / cover up.

Yes there was a device that could do that, but you need a working screen for that, plus, it got patched in an iOS update.

It's a possible combination that they botched it and are not explaining correctly, or just plain lying.

It sounds like you are just having a screen issue.

the phone vibrating/beeping every few seconds could just be email and text msg coming in.

if it does it over and over again it can me the battery is disconnected.

It most definitely sound like they are ripping you off.

first of all to recover the data, 95% of time is done by getting the phone back up a running.

and with a screen replacement the phone should be up and running.

there is no reason any repair would take days unless they are waiting for the parts to come in.

Vibrating or ponging is due to screen being dead on a working phone. Not to messages and emails coming through.

Leave the battery alone. Ponging and vibrating actually mean everything is ok except the screen.

Otherwise it's indeed a rip off.

Your phone is not a HDD. If it turns on and unlocks, you need 10 minutes to recover your data. If it doesn't turn on, you kiss your data goodbye. Point.

Thanks guys. Can you confirm that there is no increased risk of losing data when you replace a screen? I think they're probably going to say they're doing a data recovery process to be on the safe side before they replace the screen. But they're totally unrelated, right?

Nick, unless their total idiots and actually kill your phone (shorting it) while trying to repair it, you shouldn't be worried about losing data during a screen repair.

I went and spoke to the repair guy yesterday. He tells me that it wasn't just a screen issue... that there's also an issue with a port on the motherboard, and so that's why he's backing up the data before making a repair to that. He sounded genuine to me.

I'm still surprised it takes so long to pull data off an 8gb device (perhaps because he's circumventing passcode entry?? the passcode can't be entered due to the screen not functioning).

Interesting, the real question is how much do you trust the repair shop? It could be a shop customer service to back up data, but this is overkill and takes too much time. Most places have a form that states that they are not responsible for loss of data, although they will be careful to prevent loss. Unless the memory or the main board is bad there is no real need to back up data.

The repair shop is probably maximizing the costs of the repair by adding the time to back up (days to back up) when the back up should take around an hour. Another thing that may be going on is the repair is being done by someone with little training or is just incompetent.

total rip off, where I work we would have replaced the screen assembly for £30 and £20 for a battery replacement. Unfortunately there are the unscrupulous repair centres or sole traders who rely on the Layman's lack of knowledge to rip them off.
