Why is my MacBook kept turning off after the Log-in screen?

Hi,

I have an MacBook Pro 13", Unibody Mid 2010, 2.4 GHz, dual core i5, Model# A1278. It seems to be normal when I started it up. But it kept turning off after I logged in. What's problem can it be? So far, I tried to start up by holding Command key + R. Then it took me to the OS X Utility screen with 4 choices "Restore From Time Machine Backup", "Reinstall OS X", "Get Help Online", and "Disk Utility". What problem do I have? And is it possible I can backup my latest data to an external HD now? Thanks in advance for any help!

mmm ... So you don't have any display after you log in with your user account, but if you leave it at the login screen its OK for a good amount of time (good 1/2hr)?

At this point I suspect you have a corruption on your drive, so the user account files are damaged. Do you have another user account on your system? Guest is available by default (unless you took it off). See if it works.

It's likely you'll need to boot up under an external bootable drive (USB thumb drive or HD). Then run Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions a few times and then run Repair Disk. If that doesn't do it you'll need to try recovery from a TM backup which hopefully you have. Otherwise you'll need to scratch the drive and re-install the OS and everything else - Ouch!

As to backing now if you can get the external disk to boot up you might have a chance. If you enabled file encryption then the answer is no.

Dan - thank you for your help. My guest account still functions properly. However I have tried to transfer the information from Macintosh HD to my external drive so I can boot it with my external. However, I get a restore failure (input/output error) when I do this in Disk Utility. Is there anyway to recover the info and backup my internal HD?

Where you able to boot up under an external disk? More often than not this will be the only way to gain access. See if you can find a friend with a Mac and have them down load from the App Store the OS installer app (make a backup copy). Then bring your friend a good bottle of wine and a USB Thumb drive (16 GB or better) Format the thumb drive with a fresh GUID partition map using Disk Utility, then using the OS installer app install the OS onto the USB Thumb drive. Once done try restarting your friends Mac holding down the Option key and selecting your USB drive. If is boots up copy from your friends Mac the OS installer and shut down the system to then disconnect your Thumb drive. Last step: Finish the bottle of wine ;-}
