Want to upgrade i3 to an i7 CPU

Hi. I just got a used 27" 3.2 GHz i3 iMac. I'd like to upgrade to i7, is this possible cuz all these answers are from at least 3 yrs.

Btw, I'm using this for lightroom and autocad 3d and I don't speak computer.

Thanks

Vanessa

Can you give us the last four digits of your serial number so we can correctly identify your system.

I recently upgraded from imac11,3 27" i3 (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/im...) to I7-870 CPU.

The things that I learned:

- You must choose exactly the same model of CPU: i7-870 for maximum compatibility

- With i3 CPU, max ram / slot = 4 GB. With i7, it can support 8 GB ram /slot.

- if you are dismantling the imac the first time, be prepare to spend 2-3 hours.

- be careful not to clean the memory slot - there are stories people pushed the memory slot pins and render it not usable.

- Unplug the power cord and let it sit for a few minutes for the electricity to discharge from the capacitor before removing the screen.

- it is possible to add a 7mm SSD and placed it underneath the DVD rom slot area. You will need a SATA power splitter and a SATA data cable.

Good luck!

@Yusof - You could just use the spare SATA port if you are adding a drive Vs a splitter cable that way you get better data throughput.
