Just wondering if I can replace the top case without replacing the battery? A technician told me the battery was glued to the top case so it wasn't possible. I'd like to install this part (without battery) if possible:

That technician was an idiot like most who repair laptops for a "living."
Why are you even replacing the top case? Is it just the keyboard that is bad? Probably so. That technician who never learned that adhesive isn't permanent probably never figured out that you can just replace the keyboard and save a few hundred dollars.

Louis, how are you removing and replacing the keyboards on this model? I was looking at building a wooden jig with pegs in the key holes and a beer bottle capper to use as a press. It would knock out a keyboard in 30 seconds. Since it has those caps instead of screws I ordered in some self tapping screws along with the keyboard from China last week but don't have them yet. I should be able to repair an upper case for under $50 rather than the $800 Apple wants for this part new. G-d you'd think they have enough money by now.
removing the keyboard is as simple as ripping it out. Putting the new one in is miserable because you must rip out every single rivet with plyers or cutters. if you fail to rip it out the first time, give up, because you are never picking it out and never putting a screw there. It is not like the air where you rip the keyboard out, remove rivets, and you are good. These rivets are stuck into the case. If you grab the rivet and try to pull it out and fail, you will destroy the rivet and the remains of it will be forever stuck in the "hole" you would be inserting a screw into.
This is an unnecessarily miserable experience and yes, Apple DID do this on purpose!
