Did this problem come out of nowhere? Has it always been slow? Have you made any hardware or software changes recently?

How much free space do you have on your drive? Did you upgrade your OS?

It would also be helpful to know how much RAM your macbook has. You can find this out by clicking on the Apple icon in the top left of your desktop and clicking "About This Mac". Also, going to Activity Monitor and clicking on the Memory tab will show you how your computer is utilizing the RAM. At the bottom of the window if amount of memory listed in "Memory Used" is close to the amount in "Physical Memory", your computer may need more memory. If this is the case, the reason your computer is running slow is because it has to use part of the hard drive as computer memory when there is no more available RAM, which is magnitudes slower than using RAM.

Is it slow or are you getting the beach ball a lot?

Check if your fan is working. Sometimes the fan seizes. If the fan is no longer functioning, your laptop will thermal throttle to protect the internal electronics from heat damage.

Let's cut to the chase. I would put money on it being a 90% chance of the HD/IR cable. Back up your hard drive ASAP. Replace the HD/IR cable then check to see if it has destroyed your hard drive.

Yep, that'll do it, especially if you've been updating your Microsoft files, which are huge. I have to ask - why buy a beautiful machine like a macbook pro and then try to make it into a pc? What's the point? Macs used as pcs can get pc viruses, so check that's not your problem. I'm assuming you have an antivirus running. If you don't get one. Like all computers they need 'cleaning', so check your download file, delete everything you can, clean your persmissions. Then finally, use a good piece of maintenance software like Diskwarrior, run it and it'll find any other problems. Once you've done all this stop using a mac as a pc! (what did it ever do to deserve that!) ;)
