I have headphones plugged in and the volume maxed but there isn't any sound coming out of my headphones. My device does play sound without the headphones plugged in.

Try a different set of headphones first and if that doesn't work, blow compressed air into the audio jack to clean it out. If neither of theses steps work, the audio jack is not functioning properly and will likely need replacing. One other source of the problem could be a loose connection to the audio jack, and in this case, the audio jack would need the connections re-soldiered.
