Is my controller socket broken?

I've had this gamecube on a shelf for a while and decided i wanted to play it. The controllers and memory card were at my friends house who still plays regularly and they work, but when i get home my gamecube starts up and proccedes to play the game but with no control. When the wireless is in the socket the receiver light lights up when you press anything but it dosent work, and neither does the wired controller. I looked through the troubleshooting on the controllers and it said to unplug and wait and that dosent work and i never get any "no controller" page when starting it up. any help is appreciated.
