MBA keyboard is dicey & wants to power down

2012 Macbook Air 13" had water dumped into it. It's been about a month and a half now so I think all water has dried out by now.

It boots up, wifi works, charges great, but the keyboard mostly only works on the left side. External keyboard works just fine. The main issue is that a message keeps coming up on screen asking if I'm sure I want to shut down. I can cancel and it stays alive but the message often comes back. Closing the lid always causes a shutdown.

I'm willing and (hopefully) able to replace the upper case assembly (sounds like fun actually). Does it stand to reason that this would be likely to fix the problem I'm having? If so I think I'll do it!

Oh, and my plan is to see if I can find something sticky/corroded to clean first in the power switch once I get in there to save $200.

It's a start ;-}

You could try resetting the SMC services, but, I suspect your battery is also damaged.

You will likely need to clean a few things up in the process of taking the system apart.

As you state it was water not a drink then you still have the minerals within the water that have now concentrated (if it was something other than straight clean water you'll need to deal with what it has). Using distilled water with a cotton swab (Q-Tip) you should be able to clean the staining. If you find some corrosion you'll need to clean that as well. After cleaning you should go over the areas again this time with a high grade Isopropyl alcohol (85% or better).

Thanks, Dan. I should have mentioned that I did reset the SMC (and PRAM for grins and giggles). I'm pretty sure the battery is fine, it holds a charge quite nicely.

This laptop is actually owned by a friend of mine and she isn't going to let me tear it apart after all so I'm sad. I think it would have been fun!
