Replaced dock connector, iPhone won't charge from dock anymore

Hi everyone!

I replaced my dock connector after having to deal with the infamous no sound problem, which was likely caused by water damage. This problem is resolved now: the speaker sound works perfectly fine again.

Only one issue remains: when I connect the iPhone to my dock, it will not charge from the dock, nor play music to it.

It does do all other things a dock connector is supposed to do: charging (both from my computer and from a wall adapter), data transfer and err.. what else does a dock connector do?

This problem seems to be very specific; I was unable to find an answer on this website, nor anywhere else on the Internet. I hope someone is able to help me out.

Sincerely,

Jitse

Where did you get your new dock from? If possible please post a link to it. Some of the aftermarket docks need "jumpers"/air wires to fully function.

I assume you are talking about the dock connector. I got one for practically nothing from Hong Kong (http://www.ebay.com/itm/301463980837), so there's that.

Could you tell me a little more on these jumpers, or where I can get more information on them?

I would start by putting back the old dock connector. If the iPhone charges from it, it means the new dock connector is defective and you should get a new one from a different, more reliable source. iFixit usually sell some good parts backed by a good warranty.

If the iPhone does not charge from the old dock connector anymore, this should mean that something went wrong during the first repair, possibly a pry mistake. I would examine the dock connector on the logic board and around the battery connector, using a good magnifying glass, and looking for anything missing, part removed, damaged. If that's the case and you see something, tell us what.

Additional note: you say the dock may have been damaged by water damage. Is it just the dock connector that could have been splashed, or the whole phone? This could be leading to complications due to corrosion eating away at the components, in which case you need to remove (use this guide) and clean the logic board with a soft brush and 90%+ isopropyl alcohol.

Thanks for your answer! I will try to do that if I can find the time.

I don't really know how bad the water damage was, because I bought it as is. The red indicator was activated, so that is my assumption.
