Why is my Time Capsule Overheating?

You could iron clothes with it. I have read about other fixes, but was wondering; can I make the internal fan run all the time and would that keep it cool enough to iron delicate fabric?

Thanks for all the feedback. I removed the rubber bottom, jumped the fan with a resistor so it runs all the time and added rubber feet to improve the airflow underneath. It runs cool now, with only a little fan noise. The fix is described at http://sites.google.com/site/lapastenagu...

I have apple time capsule 4th gen and it gets very warm, what i have done is put a mini 20watt fan and it runs 24/7 and it keeps the tc cool, i don't know if thats the right thing but it works very well.

I don't think there is a way, but just make sure you keep the time capsule in a well ventilated area. Also the lower it is the cooler it gets, so don't put it on top of shelves (heat rises). If you live in a hot setting that may be the problem. Did it just start when summer started or before? If it was always like this, it MAY be a product defect, and I would look into that as well if I were you.

PS: Hard drives die a lot faster when its more then 50 degrees Celsius. If you can iron your cloths with it, the HDD inside is in danger...

Thanks Gabe. My TC is an early version that has been sitting unused for a year, so I worry that it is one that was reported as having a defect.

I have a mini fan running 24 seven on the time capsule 4th gen and it keeps in cool, the tc works fine.

When I first got my TC it was as hot as you rather cleverly described it. Got it replaced due to production defect.

I would have it checked at a Apple center.

The Time Capsule overheat is due to lack of air holes to let the flow of hot air get out of the equipment. It is a design problem. The solution would be to retire the rubber in the bottom of the equipment which obstruct several holes that will let it breath, but that is just one of the steps.

There is a simple hack to the device in order to set the fan on all the time, a little noise increase in order to save the valuable hard drive inside, and the rubber removal from the botom in order to let appropiate ventilation flow. Both modifications are necesary in earlier models before 2Tb models.

Look on my website [http://www.fackrell.me.uk/index.html) for a DIY fix to the TC overheating. It is a design flaw, where the internal fan has three really very fundamental faults...

1. No air-inlet hole,

2. It points the wrong way,

3. It is not turned on.

Usually the heat will kill the PSU, and that has a downloadable PDF to help with its fix. The fan can be modified and the case can be drilled, etc.
