Why does my brand new battery drain very quickly?

Hello all,

I recently replaced the battery on my mid 2009 MBP with a brand new OEM battery from IFixit. I charged the new battery to capacity and then allowed to continue charging for about 10hrs. I then allowed the battery to fully drain (which happened relatively quickly) and then charged it again to capacity.

Now even without intensive CPU usage the battery is draining very quickly and probably lasts a little over an hour. I reset the SMC and PRAM but this did not seem to help.

Can anyone shed some light on the situation?

So I replaced my battery with another new one and it seems to be working fine! The iFixit rep I spoke with suggested that the first battery may have dropped a cell in transit, causing the erratic behavior I experienced.

Never a good idea to fully drain a Li-ion battery, unless you're trying to correct seldom unplugging the charger (not a good practice either).

You could run AHT and see if there's something going on hardware wise.

Thanks for the reply. I was advised by several experienced mac technicians to cycle down the battery to 0% after fully charging it on the first pass. This was suggested in lieu of the fast draining issue.

I ran the AHT but it appears that there are no hardware issues... Both System Information and Coconut Battery suggest that the battery is in good condition and operating properly. Not sure what else could be going on...

How/ what apps your using or a runway application could be killing it. Maybe the reason you felt you needed to replace the battery was this draining issue and not the other battery at all?

I have been closely monitoring whats running via activity monitor and the problem continues regardless of whats running... I even formatted my machine and reinstalled OSX and the battery is still draining at an unprecedented rate. Using coconut battery (which is awesome!) it appears that the design capacity has dropped significantly since I first installed the battery. At this point I am thinking its just a bad battery. I'll report back once I've tried another battery.

I have a same problem. New battery from iFixit that reports as 100% healthy and able to take a full 6725mAh charge. However it drains much faster than the estimated times and only achieves around an 1hr of use under normal usage.

What's noticeable is that swell as just draining much more quickly than battery menu reports it also charges much more quickly than expected. It says around 1h 30m Unti Full plugged in with a charge of 50%. It actually did this in 30 minutes.

So lets say it's charging and discharging 3x faster than it should be doing given it's reported health and stats. Any thoughts on how this could be fixed. If not does iFixit provide something like a 12 month warranty under which I could get this battery if it's bad replaced?
