Asus N74SF display flashes black randomly but not permanently?

Hi all,

I've had this laptop for just under 3 years.

Early December it started randomly flash to white or some other solid color, then the who screen turns black. I tried to plug it into an external VGA display, then all of a sudden it the laptop LCD flashes and comes back just like nothing happened. After unplugging VGA cable, it stays on as well, but this trick does not always work though.. sometimes it just stays black, and very at one occasion VGA doesn't even work, had to plug in HDMI which still worked.

However same problem still randomly occurs, so I started to crawl the web for answers. I have already ruled out inverter problem because when I shine light on the display, it remains completely black, and ruled out backlight problem, since it works sometimes.

I send it to ASUS for repair since I'm currently in Taiwan, they thought it was the LCD display problem so changed the whole LCD. Unfortunately, not 20 minutes after I took my baby home, the same problem persists... so at least thanks to them I know it's most likely not my LCD problem either!

Right now they are saying they are saying it's probably the cable that's faulty. However they say they will probably only get the part in about a month, and I'm leaving the countries just few days after that. Given the first experience, I'm skeptical about their testing and quality control. So I'd love some expert opinions on what could be wrong or if it really could the cable (is it the LVDS cable? I've dealt with desktop for years, but this is my first laptop... so don't know that much)
