Preguntas 302 Ver todo

Despite replacing thermal paste, red dot of death still persists.

Hi. I've taken out the heatsink, cleaned out the dried up thermal paste on the CPU/GPU and bottom of heatsink, and coated it with a fresh new coat of thermal paste. I then reassembled the heatsink and fan and did the overheat reset thing. After leaving it to cool completely, I started it up again. No luck. Still got the solid red dot. I've done this twice already. I should mention that the light only goes red when connected to an HDMI cable, I've tried a couple of other cables. The HDMI is not the problem. I got a couple of videos to help illustrate my problem.

Here's the xbox starting up w/o the HDMI in.

Here's the boot up with the HDMI in.

Help me, please! I'm losing hope. Got a lot invested in the old thing.

Have you tried an av cable?

Pocholo Dela Cruz, explain this "and did the overheat reset thing." I think I know what you did, but want to make sure. You do know that that is not a fix at all, right?

- de

what are you talking about oldturkey? overheating your xbox with a towel is how all the pros do the reflows haha

- de

Yup, that is what I am afraid off. The old "reflow under the towel" trick....

- de

Actually, I didn't do the towel trick. I just unplugged the fan and let the console run until the LED blinked red, the automatic shutoff that the slims have.

There are no fixes to this. The chip is dead. Reflow/reball will bring it back for a month or two, sometimes more depending on how you use it.

With laptops you can replace the chip with a new one.

With xboxes no new are available so every fix to this is a jerry rig at best. Like all devices that use a flip chip GPU that has failed, if no new available it belongs in a bin!

Figured as such, just didn't wanna believe it. Ah well, time to look for a guy who does reballs, so I can at least get my save files back. Thanks for the answer.

-If none of those work I suggest you replace your Xbox 360 Slim Parts and you can click this link for that. This is the cheapest but fully functional parts. Try this or try an AV instead of HDMI.

-Hope this helped.

These are actually the methods I've tried, but it looks like my GPU is fried. Appreciate the effort, though.

Hi try reflowing the southbridge and the ram chips under the heatsink mostly the ones right of the gpu/cpu are the ones that can cause this problem. If you apply pressure to the south bridged and it boots up then that's your problem. Let me know what you find out and I can help you. Check the USB ports also to Make sure the not touching and grounding out.

Hi, how do I apply pressure to the south bridge exactly? I don't wanna damage the logic board. And what do I look for to see if the USB ports are grounding out? Cause during its lifetime I always stuck flash drives in the xbox and it might be that.

Thanks!

- de

Hi you would need to reflow the southbridge with a reflow machine or heat gun for about 45 secs then apply pressure with your fingers or take about 5 penny's taped in electrical tape and press down. Then try to boot it on. To check the usb's look for any bent pins that might be touching metal or each other. Try also to reflow the ram chips under the heat sink mostly the right 2 of the cpu/gpu. They also cause the red dot issue.

that penny trick isn't even for this console...

- de

He won't be leaving the penny's in there it's only to apply pressure when the chip is hot. If he uses 11 penny's then the drive would apply the pressure to the southbridge but I don't recommend that. Only as a test to see if it works then if it does buy this kit and case closed.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Complete-Southbr...

Also check the standby codes. Hold the sync button then hit the eject button 4 times total. Each time you hit the eject button the red lights will change. Like 4 lights is 0 1 is one and so on.. And you will get a code like 1022 justed a example. They will help you to narrow down your problem.
