Why won't the power button work?

The power button works for booting up the iPad, powering it down, and even taking screenshots. However, it will not sleep or wake the screen. I tried using Assistive Touch to sleep the display, and that doesn't work either. I tried restoring the iPad in iTunes, but it still has the same problem even after the restore.
