USB ports not working

Hi,

I have late 2011 macbook pro 13.3 and usb ports are not working. One port is like dead and isn't working at all. Other is working perfectly when I put my mouse receiver, but don't recognize any flash drives or other devices, but I can see what is plugged in this port in system information/usb. For example, if I put my phone into working usb port I can see in system information/usb that Samsung Android is connected, but that's it is all I can do. Disk utility don't recognize anything...

I have tried to format the hard drive and downgrade my os x from CD, but that haven't changed anything, so probably it isn't software problem.

It would be so great if you could tell me what can be wrong with my mac, because now I just don't know what to do.

The USB posts have a fuse link to protect the power feeds. This is a hardware problem not software.

It sounds like you burnt it on the non-fuctioning ports. To test try plugging in a powered USB hub into the port and then plug the USB device into the hub as the Hub is offering power to the device it should work. If it does then you know it just needs a new fuse link.

Thank you for your answer.

I have connected powered external CD drive to 'working' USB port and it is working! Disk utility recognize the drive and computer is able to launch CD from it, so as you said, I need new fuse link, yes?

It would be really great if you could tell me how to replace it and where I can get new one.

Thank you again.

It does sound like a hardware problem. I had similar issue and Apple replaced the logic board entirely - though that's their solution for many problems.

It's quite interesting to use a USB Multimeter which plugs into your USB port and looks at volts, amps, and tests charging voltage & current. CoJoie make a good one, but many other options on Amazon.
