Can I back up my iPod that is unresponsive with a passcode

i recently replaced my ipod 4th generation screen and the screen is now black, and unresponsive. i have a password on it, which i know, and would like to back it up on my itunes and transfer the info onto a new device. the only problem is i cant enter the password on the ipod. any suggestions?
