The Classics came in a few different orientations:

  • a thin 80 GB
  • a thick 160 GB
  • a thin 120 GB
  • a thin 160 GB

Having that said, you can upgrade your iPod with a thin 160 GB hard drive without changing any other parts. If you choose to go the thick 160 GB route, you will need to replace the following parts as well:

I hope this helps!

yes, but you will need to buy a new back cover, because the 160GB hard drives are a few mm thicker, so you probably want to buy the back cover for a 160GB classic. as i am aware, ipod classics should support bigger drives than the one they shipped with, as long as they can fit in the case and are 1.8" and use the same connector, when you install the drive, you will boot to the sad face, then use itunes to restore the ipod, but there is a chance that itunes will format the disk to 120GB, so be carefull
