My laptop keeps freezing-about 1 yr old.

My laptop recently started frezing up. It first started when I used Facebook-today it froze up with Itunes on-while a cartoon was being played. I use 1TB external as a backup & where I keep most of my items to save space on my laptop to prevent it from being bogged down. I'm taking a class for IT Security so I'm trying to learn things myself-no clue why this is happening. When it freezes I can not even get into task manager to shut anything down I have to manually press the power button to completely shut it off which I don't like doing-I'd rather (at minim.) be able to hit restart....help :) Teach me lol. Thanks

Ok. REALLY dumb question-how do I test both of those?

Also-

I have an Acer (older). I can't get it to power up. Was thinking maybe it needs a new battery? If not maybe a new hard drive? The last time I used it I don't re-call it having any problems and nothing to keep it from booting up. I don't think it ever 'crashed'. It lasted a lot longer than my Gateway that is for sure. I think I'm going to stick with HP-they never *knock on wood* gave me problems and lasted years. Thanks for the help everyone.

1. Test memory

2. Test hard drive.

If both pass test, reinstall Windows.

Sorry I guess I could have asked you here how to test the memory and hard drive and how to re-install Windows. I should know this and I bet it's fairly simple-I feel stupid for asking. Thanks for the advice & help.

I would start off by removing the external HDD from the system and booting up. Try scanning for Malware and Viruses as Facebook (and myspace) is notorious for having malicious advertisements that can render a system unusable.

If nothing is found, try using the computer without the external HDD attached at all as some external HDDs can cause windows to freeze the disk management, which causes windows to not be able to access the master hard drive. It's an odd glitch, it's a random glitch, but it does exist.

Tracy-Thanks. Yeah even without using the HDD it still freezes up. It was doing ok for a while but has started back up. Sometimes I restart it and it will let me log in but then I can't do anything so I have to manually restarts. If I leave it on all day it usually freezes up or runs apps VERY slow.
