Water Damage Problem with iPhone 5s. Battery problem?

So my friend jumped into a pool with his iPhone 5s about a week ago. The phone was in a completely closed case (Otterbox Defender Series, I know it isn't waterproof) and was underwater for about 8 to 10 seconds. When this happened, the iPhone was about 80% charged and was in perfect condition. After the iPhone went for a swim, he turned off the phone and put it in rice for about 36 to 48 hours.

After he took it out, he plugged it in and it was stuck in a boot loop with the dead battery icon and then follows to the apple logo, where 3 seconds later the phone would shut off again. He came over and I opened up the phone and took a look on the inside. The water damage sensors on the logic board were all dark red. The phone was completely dried out and I then went to my laptop and plugged it into iTunes and ran an iTunes Restore on it. Then the phone worked, for about 3-4 hours. Now it is doing the same thing again where it will not turn on unless plugged in and says the battery is dead right when plugged in.

It is worth noting that when I plugged it into iTunes, it was on a dark screen but in recovery mode after seeing the apple logo for about 4 seconds. It might be the battery, but I am not sure. Thanks for reading this very long paragraph. Someone please help me. Thanks. If any other information is needed to help, please ask!

First of all rice is only a myth doesn't do squat. Would you dry you cloths in it ? I think not.

The phone needs striped and washed with ISO alcohol then left to dry and reassembled and buy a new battery also 99% of the time water damage shorts the battery

Washing it out with 99% alcohol if there is corrosion the battery might not work

Putting a phone into a bag of rice, especially with a CHARGED BATTERY is going to do absolutely nothing to save a phone. I have disassembled phones that have been in rice for weeks and still found moisture behind the battery and inside the screen assembly flex cables , especially on Apple. I wish people would just do the right thing and quit guessing or spreading myths. It needs to be disconnected from the battery ASAP, as this is what does the damage...plus water mixed with hand goo salt from using it pushed into all the cracks and crevices (ie: SALTWATER)....and it needs to be disassembled and boiled in 91% ISO alcohol....and inspected for damage/corrosion after cleaning. NONE of these are waterproof despite claims, and NOTHING but the above method will dry out water between the sheets of a back light or inside the shielding of a logic board or under the battery with a bag of rice...all they do is a slow meltdown inside as the battery drains through everything...sitting in a bag of rice. Let a Samsung AMOLED dry out in rice, sure...after a couple days they seem to work great, Sammy makes a good phone...except that salt water sits in the loop of the LCD connector where it enters the glass of the LCD...and roasts away the power and ground leading to the screen...and various feeds. Bare copper, not covered about 1,mm wide. Ya know it's happened when on day 3 the crisp image slowly begins to disappear behind a veil of green static... and you are into a $150-$400 repair depending on model. I charge $60 to dry a phone out, plus parts. Usually that's $20 more for a new battery. I almost always give back a none the worse for wear phone provided it wasn't charged or left in a bag of rice for a week Most places charge the same. Money well spent...On a side, NO, I can't help you! By the time it would get to me it would be too late! Support your local reputable phone repair guy/gal...pull the battery, DON'T CHARGE IT (ps, don't light your basement on fire because it's flooded either) and take it IMMEDIATELY to her/him!

This is what I did for my phone and it is a sure fire fix. Things you will need a can of scrubbing bubbles, rubbing alcohol and a tooth brush. Completely disassemble your phone down to the logic board. Place it in a plastic container. Cover it with scrubbing bubbles and allow to let it sit for 2min. When all bubbles are liquid scrub all contacts with the toothbrush. When done dip the board in alcohol and completely dry. Reassemble and there you go. I had an issue with my screen not working but that was due to a burnt contact. Added flux and fixed it. You will also need to change out the battery. My phone is running hot but not killing the battery. I have not changed my battery so I am sure that is the my problem. Hope this helps everyone out.

  • Always remember when your phone gets wet don't turn it on. You will short it out and make things worse**

If you use a toothbrush some of the chips/capacitors will detach from the motherboard.

When this happened to me, I just soaked the charging port in the ISO alcohol discussed above then just got in there with a paint brush and cleaned out the charging port connection. All said and done it took 5 minutes (plus drying time) and the charging port worked brilliantly after.
