New battery drains very quickly

I purchased a new battery for my old Macbook in March. At first, the new battery held a charge of 4-5 hrs. In the last few weeks, it's taken a nose dive & powers the computer for less than an hour.

I followed the instructions for charging up the battery the first time. Is the battery faulty or does it need to be re-trained or something?

Depending on what you are doing an hour may be all it it will last. You could try an SMC reset and conditioning the battery.

I only use it to surf the web & check email - nothing new or different from before. I will try your suggestion. Thanks!

Jessica - it only takes a few times of running a battery flat to really mess up it's ability to take a hold a charge so if you've done that it might also be a reason for the change...otherwise talk to your vendor. Cheap Chinese batteries have been know to have failure right out of the box... I've never heard of an issue like you describe, but, if SMC reset and a battery condition doesn't help it could be a faulty battery.

I did the SMC reset & saw no change. What do you mean, "running a battery flat"? It is not unusual for me to run the battery down until the computer sleeps - is that what you mean? I did not realize that was a bad thing. If it is, I wonder why my original battery lasted for so many years. This is my first time replacing it & I have not changed my usage habits.

When I first posted my question, the lights on the back of the battery were only lit when it was plugged in & charging. As soon as I unplugged it, the lights went off completely. The battery shows a 100% charge, but drains quickly - now less than half an hour. Also, the computer doesn't go to sleep - when the battery hits about 30% charge, the computer just completely shuts down with no warning.

In the last couple of days, the battery no longer shows any lights on the back, whether plugged in or not. The battery is an OEM battery from iFixit. I guess I'll contact them about the issue.

Thanks again for your feedback!
