Home button not working, even after I replaced it

I've fixed about a dozen iPhone's so far (I usually do it for friends, who have a broken screen or LCD or something). Today I replaced somebody's home button, cuz it was broken. It could be pressed (it popped in and out just fine) but nothing would happen.

Because the guy had only told me that his homebutton wasn't working I thought that the button itself was broken and ordered a new one.

Now that I've taken the old button out, put the new one in and reassembled everything, nothing has changed. This doesn't surprise me much as the button I took out seemed to be good...

Can anyone give me a hint on whatelse could be the problem?

I figured it must be either a software problem or the mainboard, but if there's anything I could do to fix the problem I'd be glad to know!

Thank you guys!!

I feel like a noob!

I just replaced the entire dock connector, like you suggested.

Turns out the button still isn't working. I then put in a different mainboard, just to get the same result - the home button is not working.

I've now tried replacing every 1 of the 3 parts which I believe can cause the home button to not work a all: Mainboard, Dock Connector, Home Button itself

I really doubt that both mainboards I tried have broken contacts, and the dock connector and home button are both new and have no scratches etc.

WTF is wrong with my iPhone?

ANYONE?

thx

Hi,,

I have just had exactly the same problem. After scratching my head for a while trying to figure out why it was not working. I thought i couldnt loose much by spending $15 on a new dock connector unit that the home button contacts go onto.

After spending ten minutes putting it in, turned it on and the hey presto, the home button worked fine.

So, i would go for replacing the dock connector unit.

Cheers, Chris.

Thanks for the advice. After replacing the mainboard I figured that it must be the dock connector.

I tried to replace only the flex cable though - but I messed up soldering the cable to the connector unit.

Now I'm waiting to receive the dock connector assembly. We'll see how it turns out.

Hi,

I have the same problem and am just about to order an dock port, however i'v just surfed the net and someone with the same problem mentioned the two copper prongs that make contact with the dock port. He said that his were slightley bent/curled up so he carefully staightened them and the home button worked!!

I dont know if this will help, but it worth a look :)

when you bend the iphone 3g home button connectors are you supposed to make them flat or are you supposed to bend the upward ( straight in the air)

lift them up in the air- they are incredibly fragile...sometimes it's just easier to get the flex! i'd also clean all the contacts for home button before buying dock connector

Alternativly you could solder a new one on, or solder a tiny bit of copper wire bent in a V contacting at the same point. Hope this has helped.

the two prongs have to be straight if bent, button wont work, run along the prongs with a small screwdriver till straight then home button will work
