Has anyone installed a mac mini in an imac volleyball

I love the volleyball iMac, but it's too slow for new software and not intel! I'm thinking of taking out the guts and inserting a bare mac mini? Has anyone tried this? Any thoughts?

Sounds like a great idea! Physically, it seems like it would work out well, as the dimensions are almost close enough that you could just plop a gutted volleyball on top of the Mini, and there wouldn't be too many engineering concerns to overcome. One thought, though -- you might want to pop the case off the Mini while it's in there, just to dissipate heat. I have my Mini in my entertainment center, and the fan runs quite a bit in there.

It seems like getting the iMac's screen connected to the Mini's DVI port might be the trickiest part. Maybe someone more proficient than I am would know how to cut the screen cable and piece together a DVI plug for it?

Anyway, cool idea, and you should definitely do a teardown, or more accurately, a "buildup" for iFixit as you go!

You cannot drive a RAW LCD from any type of external connection, you would need display circuitry. like that is found on the logic board of the Imac, or a LCD with a control board.

i have a mac mini, and an imac G4, if you want to combine them, be up for the challange, my iMac has a few mods though, i removed the internal display, and added extra cooling, put the sleep light on the front next to the drive(Drilling required) and put the mic in one of the top holes, and run the computer connected to an external display, the iMac guts are hard to remove, and are designed to accomadate imac parts, you couls use the drive cage with a sata 5.25" optical drive Drive and a standard 3.5" hard drive, with some cable manipulation, but there is no way you could hook the internal display to the mac mini, it uses a non-standard connector directly to the logic board, so if you want it to be headless, go agead, you might even be able to get the external power brick from the mini inside the imac casing, but ther internal display wont work at least without a lot of cutting, soldering, and shrink wrap.

Thanks for support. What about splicing monitor cable to imac's cable and using monitor port on mini?
