iMac 24" 2008 Start up/Booting issues?

24" 3.06 Bought 2nd hand. Seemed to be working OK for a couple of weeks. Wanted to down grade the OSX running Mavericks 10.9.1. to Snow Leopard 10.6.

I did not have original discs. But thought it would be alright booting off Memory Sticks or 10.6 Retail version disc.

Deleted drive to "GUID", tried to boot off 10.6 disc hangs at the apple with roundel going round. Can't get to the utilities or installer. Tried booting off Memory stick. Start-up manager works, everything appears just won't boot. Same. Disc drive OK, can hear accessing. Took memory out. One stick at a time. Done PRAM/NVRAM. No change.

I used my old G5 Imac via firewire to look at the hard disc. Comes up on the desktop. Can't use the installer as it is not intel. My 10.5 retail disc says it needs to be "Apple partition Map" so I thought it was not a good idea to install it as the imac had 10.2.5 originally on it.

Will having the original discs really work? Basically stuck.

Firmware issue?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Cheers in advance ifixit hard krew :)

First on the formats, G5 use the Apple Partition map and Intels use GUID formats.

Yes I was aware of that. What is the first version of 10.5 OSX. I can install on "GUID"? Everymac says the original install on this machine was X 10.5.2 (9C2028)

Your best bet here is to contact Apple support to get the recovery CD/DVD that came with the system (aprox. $20). Then use that disk to boot up your system to reformat your HD.

I suspect your issue here is the DVD you have is a dual layer that the iMac you have can't read (8X DL "SuperDrive").

The other option here is setup your iMac in target mode and via a Firewire cable connected to a second mac setup the HD and install the OS via it. Follow this Apple TN How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode.

Both Machines have 8x DL Superdrives. They both spin the disc up fine, all discs & memory sticks. I have copied the OS 10.9 retail to a memory stick and it still hangs. I can't install 10.6 from my G5 Imac as it says installer will not work with non-intel machine via firewire.

Come people dig deep. I am find it annoying Apple seem to suggest any intel machine can be reinstalled with 10.6 after wiping with 10.6 retail disc Snow Leopard. I am finding this not the case.

I should have pointed out not all of the macs will boot from a USB flash drive. In some cases upgrading the firmware added the support (not documented added feature). Sadly, you can't upgrade the firmware now.

I would try the target mode solution (with a FireWire cable between them) if you have one working system. Use the working system to setup & format the HD, then drag copy your system folder over to the other system. See if that can get you going. Otherwise it's the grey disks or going to an Apple Store for help.

Right thanks Dan, I will give this a whirl. Just the system folder. Not Library? This is annoying after forking out for the 10.6 disc.

No Joy. Just Toggles from ? folder / Apple / No Entry symbol. Will try & get original discs and update you. Thanks for your assistance so far.
