How can I repair my iPhone 4S which fell into water?

My wife dropped her iphone 4S in water for about 4-5 seconds. The phone turns on but the display doesnt. I put the phone in a large sandwich bag with rice for about 4 days. The phone is on but i cant see anything. I did a reset by holding down the power button and home button and after a few seconds i can see the display for about ahalf of a second to a second and then it goes black again. i can also hear the siri coming on if i hold the home button down but i dont see anything. Is this iphone still repairable? Please help. Thank you Willie

Thank you everyone for your inputs. I really do appreciate them all. I lways heard that when you want to dry an electronic device from water damage that you should but it in rice so thats what i did. I am also going to try washing everything out in the 90% alcohol and letting it all dry. I already got her a new phone. In fact i upgraded to the 5S and gave her my iphone 5. I had insurance on the phone. But I would still like to fix the phone and keep it as a spare. I also have an old iphone 4 but I dont think that the parts on an Iphone 4 will fit or work on a iphone 4S. I will look into it. Again thank you for everyones input. Please keep them coming

So...you didn't buy her a *new*phone...you just gave her your old ph! You got yourself a new one!

What's with husband's passing on older versions to their wives? Can'nt they buy them new and themselves keep what ever they have?! In a nutshell that's showing I'm male, I'm superior to you!

I dropped my phone in water for 4-6 seconds and then put it in rice for 2 days and then my sound doesn't work without headphones or speakers. I dropped it in water 3 months ago and even every now and then my headphones don't work. All my headphones work on my family's phones but only one of the sides work on phone and this is every pair of headphones.

wilfredo velez, I am with "con" on this one. Rice is a great first aid, but it does not prevent any kind of corrosion. The best thing to do is to stop using the device, (remove the battery) and to totally disassemble it. Then clean it with +90% isopropyl alcohol. This will displace the water and stop corrosion. It it okay to submerge a board in isopropyl alcohol. After that, air dry all the components. Do not forget to clean the connectors on the board as well as the cables. Then re-assemble with a new battery This is not optional but a must to avoid failure later on. " i can see the display for about ahalf of a second to a second" could be backlight circuitry error. Check your board for any missing or damaged component. You could try a new display, but its a bit of a gamble. Water damage is the toughest to trouble shoot and to repair. Hope this helps, good luck.

I don't understand this rice solution or who made this up but in causes more damage than good cause when water drys on electronics it corrodes. Like why would you put a £400 phone and think rice can fix it.. It's beyond me..

The phone needs stripped out the motherboard needs all the guards taken off and washed with 99% alcohol then let dry and rebuild phone. If your display isn't going it could have blowen the backlight or just the screen..

You would be saver just giving to a repair shop cause if your using rice then it's not the job for you

Actually, rice absorbs all the water by removing it from the device completely, not drying it. Please get your facts right. And I will also point out that iFixit sells the thirsty bag which does the same thing.

Mate I repair iPhones as a profession and believe me rice in some minor cases yes it can work but in my eyes it's so silly get the job done right and you'll not have no problems in the future.. Yes rice absorbed water but this is over hours not seconds it's not a super rice lol.

Water will dry faster and destroy components ..best thing to do is open up asap and get washed out.. A customer was with me one day 2 hour after was water damaged and had in a bag of rice when opening up the water was corroding the logicboard that was only hours imagin longer

- de

And the negitave point lol

Sorry I musta hit a sore spot

- de

2 hours in a bag of rice won't work. Actually, the longer it's in the bag, the more water will dry out. Also, if you change the rice often, it can work better, as the rice has a finite absorption capacity.

Can you not read she had put it into a bag of rice as soon as it was water damaged ok she then came to me so the phone was in a bag of rice for about two hours before I got it..

I open the phone up straight away and there was already corrosion starting on the motherboard next you'll try to tell me rice cleans corrosion.. Oh my day

At the end of the day if your a gambler use the rice trick

Yes. The problem is most likely the display assembly. If it still doesn't work after replacing that, then you have a logic board failure. Also, check for any corrosion around the display assembly connectors. If there is, clean it and your current assembly may work.

@Jack Ryan, please do not use the downvotes because of a difference in opinion. Downvotes should be reserved for blatantly wrong or misleading answers.

It is misleading, as rice works often.

- de

Jack Ryan, no it is not. Rice is a great first aid, and it is an easy desiccant for anybody to obtain, but rice does not fix anything. Even if your device will turn on after it has been placed in rice, it still needs to be properly cleaned. If a liquid immersed device does not get cleaned properly, one is asking for corrosion failure later on. Those are the devices that are almost impossible to repair since any one component may have failed. I do not believe that con tried to mislead anybody.

I dropped my phone in a puddle of water on my way home, too. I'm having it held on rice for the moment, I'm taking it at a local iPhone service store later so they can fix it. It works properly. Its the sound that it isn't coming out, rice works as first aid i think, but to be 100% safe, take it to a service, 50$ it can cost or a little more. At least its better than buying a new one

My iPhone 4S fell int a bucket of water. I removed it immediately. And switched it off. The torch is on and I cannot switch that off. No rice so after shaking out as much water I have left it as it is on a dry towel.

I can only take it to the service center tomorrow after 12 hours.
