Phone shows Logo but won't boot

It may be a basket case but I'll ask anyway.

History:

Friend's daughter cracked the glass. It was working OK until she fell in the pool.

Opened the phone. Signs of water were minimal except for the display area.

Disassembled, cleaned, dried sitting for a week in the lab.

New screen #%%'y from eBay.

Connected to a wall supply it will show the Apple logo when I press the power button for 3 secs but after about 15 seconds it goes dark.

Connected to my MacBook I get no action at all, can't get iTunes to see it, can't access DFU mode.

Could it be as simple as the battery? or is it likely some fatal damage that is not visible?

Solución Elegida

I had similar symptoms after taking my iPhone into the hot tub.

At first the phone was dead. I took all the parts out to the back case and dried them out. After reassembly the phone was still dead.

I put the phone into a bag of rice for a few days. After a full day charging, turning it on showed the Apple symbol for a 10-15 seconds and then it quit (same as you described, I think.) After another day of charging my phone became fully functional again.

That worked for 24 hours, but when I tried to charge it again it returned to the behavior you described (Apple symbol for 10-15 seconds then black).

I had meanwhile ordered a battery from iFixit so I replaced the battery and the phone is back to normal operations.

RECOMMENDATION: Change out the battery.

BTW, the iFixit battery replacement comes with a nice #00 Phillips screwdriver and a plastic spudger. Nice!

UPDATE: Since I replaced the battery two weeks ago, this phone has performed flawlessly. Not bad for a total soaking!

Sometimes it can be solved by a reset ;)

Soft Reset

----------

1. Press and hold Sleep/Wake on the top of the phone until the red slider appears.

2. Drag the slider.

3. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

If a soft reset doesn’t solve your problem, you may have to resort to performing a hard/factory reset.

Hard Reset

----------

Note: These steps will delete the data off the phone, but you can Restore data using your computer.

Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for about ten seconds. The apple logo will appear and your iPhone 3G S will be reset.
