Preguntas 309 Ver todo

What SSD models are suitable for optical drive replacement?

This guide explains how to install a second hard drive (by replacing iMac's optical drive).

It's Crucial m4 256 GB SSD (model № CT256M4SSD2) on the picture. (BTW there is another Crucial m4 256 GB SSD - CT256M4SSD1. But as I can suppose it's impossible to use it for replacement.)

So, what other SSD drives are suitable for this replacement? Any suggestions? How to pick the right one?

Question 2: Can I use only this SSD as system hard drive?

The optibay will take any 2.5 inch SATA hard drives up to 12.5 mm in height up to 1TB in size as long as it's a SATA II e.g. 3.0Gb/s transfer speed. So if you can find a 2.5" SSD that meets those specifications no matter the manufacturer you should be good.

Note: This enclosure does not work with ATA drives or drives taller than 12.5mm

If this Answer is helpful please remember to return and mark it Accepted.

I can use for this purpose any 2.5" SSD which is up to 12.5 mm in height and has SATA II (3 Gbps) interface and its capacity is up to 1 TB. Am I right?

The bad thing is that almost all of SSDs have SATA 6 Gbps interface. How to deal with that?

Which of Plextor SSDs will be OK for the replacement?

Thank you.

You either choose a different size or a different manufacturer, connect and external 1TB drive, or, sell this machine and get a different one. This drive is SATA II - but it's no where near the size you think you need.

What is a caveat in replacing procedure? I can't understand.

It is said SATA 6 Gbps is backward compatible with SATA 3 Gbps. All requirements listed above are tied to the enclosure and not to the SSD.

Thus, there are some hardware hidden features which may prevent system to run correctly. Need more explanation definitely.

Anyways, machead3, thank you for help.

Get in writing from the vendor that if it's not compatible you'll pay no restock or return fees. Many of the SSD that were "promised" or "stated" to be backward compatible turned out to hang or freeze when put in machines. Sometimes when you get two automagic detecting devices connected to each other you have to manually set a lower speed.
