New harddrive, can't get past red X, can't get into disk mode

Hey guys,

So I've replaced the hard drive in my friends 80GB classic with a brand new 120GB I bought off ebay. I also changed out the battery while I was at it.

But now when I try to boot it up I get the same error as we got with the old hard drive, the red X.

Now I've tried countless times getting it into disk mode but it just won't go.

Do you think it must be the hard drive cable? The only other thing I was thinking was if the ebay seller sent me a dodgy drive, but I doubt that was the case as they had good feedback.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Rob.

robz18, it is possible that you have a bad hard drive cable. It is also possible that your drive is not compatible. It might help if you let us know what drive you had and what drive you used to replace it with. To check your drive I recommend a Zif-to-USB adapter, which will help you to determine if your drive is working. Hope this helps, good luck.

Hi oldturkey, thanks for the response. The old drive is an 80GB Samsung HS081HA and the drive I replaced it with is a 120GB Toshiba 1234GAL. I'm nearly sure this is a compatible replacement, what do you think?

I don't have a Zif-to-USB adapter but could probably find one online if needs be.

Thanks again.

That drive should work. Replace the hard drive cable and use one for the Toshiba drives. I've had an issues before with Hitachi and Toshiba having incompatible cables. If that does not work, get an inexpensive Zif-to-USB cable and see if you can access the drive and format it.
