replace 2012 glossy display for 2011 hi-res antiglare display

Hi. I was just curious if it was possible to swap out the glossy display out of a 2012 macbook pro 15 and put in a 2011 anti-glare hi res display from an early 2011 macbook pro?

Will the hinges fit?

Will the camera work?

Will blue tooth work?

Will any other peripherals located on the display work?

Thanks

Solución Elegida

I've recently tried to swap displays between a mid 2010 with hi-res display and a mid 2012 with glossy.

The 2012 glossy display worked fine on the 2010 mbp, including the newer camera. I also had to move the wifi+bluetooth board because the antennas are different. (Moving the antennae was not possible, due to small differences between the way it is mounted inside the clutch) After an VNRAM reset, the new wifi+bluetooth board worked fine on the older machine. So I had a 2010 mbp, with 2012 display, 2012 camera, 2012 bluetooth+wifi.

However, the 2010 hi-res display did not work on the 2012 machine, because the LVDS cable connector is slightly different. The 2010 display had a connector which is about half a millimeter wider, so I could not plug it into the socket on the 2012 logic board.

I did not expect this, because the LVDS connector sold on this site claims to be compatible with all models. Which is probably true, but as seen in my case, older cables may not work on newer systems. Also, the display assembly replacement guides for the 2010-2011-2012 models are re-using the images from the 2010 version, so it was not possible the see the differences between the different systems.

To answer your question:

1. the hinges will fit, they are definitely the same for all 2010-2011-2012, 15" models.

2. the camera will work. It is just an USB camera.

3. bluetooth and wifi will work, but you may have to replace the wifi+bluetooth board

BUT, you may not be able to connect the display, if the LVDS connectors are not exactly the same.

Just try it. It is not very difficult and you may get lucky.

Jos,

I never got the opportunity to attempt it. I couldn't find a good deal on a 2012 Macbook pro 15.

If you do attempt it please let me know the outcome.

Thanks Marc
