Is my logic board dead?

As of 7am this morning my Macbook Pro 15" Unibody (june 2009) refuses to power on at all, no fan, no hdd activity, no lcd activity... all i get when i press the power button is a quick flash of the sleep indicator on the front panel next to the IR sensor.

I've tried resetting PRAM/SMC with no success, i also removed the batter and pressed power for 10 seconds, no success.

As the laptop is clearly out of warranty, can anyone offer any troubleshooting advice ?

OK, lets start again, Please answer these questions:

- What is the color of the Mag-Safe plug? Green or Orange. When the system is off and does it get to Green.

- You had stated you might have been using the wrong power adapter. Are you using the correct one for this system (80W)?

- Open the system up and disconnect the HD SATA cable. Now restart your system what happens?

- With the internal drive disconnected, but only if you are getting the folder with the question mark displayed put in your system recovery CD/DVD into the optical drive is the system able to boot up?

- If you don't have a recovery CD/DVD do you have a known working USB or FireWire HD which you can connect (it must be externally powered for this test). Is the system able to boot up?

- When the system is off, or on for that matter, the Mag-Safe plug is green

- I am using a 60W adapter, i will source an 85W and try it (but note i do have a fully charged battery, as can been seen when i press the battery indicator)

- Will test and advise.

- Will test and advise.

- I have a Mavricks bootable USB HDD (not externally powered) I will source an externally powered HDD, test and advise.

Are you up to doing some digging here? I would start by opening up the system so you can disconnect the HD SATA cable.

Your symptom sounds like you have power, just that the draw is to great so it shuts down.

If the HD has died the motor can short out so by disconnecting the HD we should see a different response when you start it up again.

If you have an external HD FireWire or USB with a bootable OS present on it you may want to give that a try after you first see if it tries to startup.

Please let us know what you discover - Good Luck!

Once plugged in the adapter indicator is green.

I swapped out the HDD yesterday thinking it may be the issue without any success.

I do have an external HDD with the Mavricks installer put if i connected it to USB and hit the power button I just get the flashing SLI, it flashes only once, then nothing.

Should I disconnect the internal HDD and try the external ?

for what it's worth, i've uncovered something interesting.

if i connect an external USB HDD and then press power i can hear three very successive clicks coming from the unit, if i remove the USB HDD and press power I hear only one click.

- de

Is it powered by an external power source or is it using the USB's outlets power services?

- de

Please answer the Q's as that could also help in figuring out whats amiss.

- de

the external HDD needs only USB power

after closer inspection, the three clicks are emanating from the external USB HDD and not the macbook

Check the voltage of the power supply with a polymeter on the motherboard. There is a chance the problem is on the power supply.

thanks for your reply, i've tried it with two 60W adapters and it expresses the same issues ... as the battery is full, i'm wondering if i need a 80W adapter or is a 60W adapter ok ?

- de

Yes, you do need a 80 Watt power adapter. If the battery is charged (Mag-Safe is green) then it should boot up without the charger connected (either 60 or 80). And no you won't hurt your system using the wrong charger here. It will just take much more time to charge the battery and your systems draw will run down the battery if you are using the wrong adapter and running it at the same time.
