Preguntas 142 Ver todo

DVD-RW making noises and not loading discs.

Just got this MacMini 1,1 and decided to upgrade to SnowLeopard. DVD RW sucked in the disc OK but then made a big power up noise and lots of clocking sounds. The disc didn't load ... and I tried several discs.

My real question is ... the DVD RW is a Pioneer DVR-K06, but this website gives the Toshiba UJ-85J or UJ-875 as the listed replacement.

However I have a UJ-846-B lying around ... I was wondering of I can install that without killng something? Seems to have the same connections and so forth ... what would happen?

Well guys I decided to go ahead and install it ... I figured it couldn't do too much damage ... (!)

Success!! The drive worked perfectly and silently! Leopard is installed and I'm watching movies now!

Big shout out to Mac OSX ... seriously great O/S ... none of that Microsuck driver searching matching B/S!

Finally I really gotta send big props to this website and its contributors! I've done 4 or 5 repairs or upgrades now and this site has proved to be the best! Simply the best! Better than all the rest!

Gotta go and add afew notes to the Mini pages ...

If its the same height than the original drive and has the same connector it should be alright.

Good to hear; I'm going to try the same thing.

The mostly-working Mac Mini A1176 I just picked up also has a failing optical drive. It seems to have no problem with CDs and CDRs; occasionally reads DVDs and DVD-ROMs but usually spits 'em back out, and never accepts DVD-Rs or DVD+R/DLs (purple substrate).

The existing drive claims to be a Matshita UJ-846-C (aka Panasonic) and is also labeled Apple Super 846CA. Checks seem to indicate the UJ846C costs around $50 on eBay and more at retail (although it seems to cost $199.95 here on ifixit).

But several Panasonic UJ-846-Bs are selling for much less over on eBay, so I'm going to try that first.
