I don't have a detailed guide with images, but I can give a bit of advice for removing the top screen. After removing the circuit board, you'll need to remove the back cover for the top screen or the hinge-pin won't move. On the hinge side (not the side with the ribbon cables and wifi antenna) you will see the white part of the hinge pin.

Please note, the top screen has to be fully open for the hinge pin to move

Using a small flat blade, you can slide the hinge pin so that the retaining plastic clip is now free. After that you can close the lid and slide the hinge pin the rest of the way out. Be gentle with the ribbon cable as you slide them through the slot in the base.

You have to roll the ribbon cables into a tube to get them to slide through the hinge area. Pay particular attention to how the 3 ribbon cables are layered as it is very important that they go back in the same order!!! You can use scotch tape to hold them when you roll them up.

When putting it back together, the lid has to be in the fully open position again for the hinge pin to slide all the way into the retaining clip. You will see how the white part of the hinge pin fits into the retaining clip and that it has to be in a specific position to slide all the way back in.

If any ribbon cable gets torn, or they are not fully connected, the DS will not function. And I mean ANY of the 10 ribbon cables throughout the unit.

Thanks for answer,

I have one more question, do I need to separate top and bottom screen in order to replace the display?

I just want to replace broken display.

I found one teardown of 3ds xl- http://techon.nikkeibp.co.jp/english/NEW...

If I remove screws near to the top inside camera I sould be able to open display without separating top and bottom shell?

You absolutely have to separate the top and bottom- the way the ribbon cables are situated and threaded through the assembly makes this a difficulty rating of 10 on a 1-10 scale. The ribbin cable fused to the lcd can only be removed or replaced with a full teardown.

Do u think its possible that a ribbon came undone,I knew I needed hindge replacement but thought it was fixed.I slightly dropped it on the bed and the hinge side came off,but the ribbon side is still attached the top screen is black but has like the light coming through which makes me belive all I need to do is reconnect a ribbon, should I do a tear down and rebuild? Another question,I'm from Rhode island. Nintendo wants 90 for the 3dsxl fix.is there any other way to get it fixed any one else fix them? Best buy? GameStop is where I bought it all they want to do is buy it for 50$ like that's there answer, even thought I know they fix them!

The top screen can be a bit tricky, but luckily there has been a guide created that will help you through the steps in order to replace the Upper LED. This Nintendo 3DS XL Upper LED Replacement Guide should be helpful in the replacement process.

Good luck!

WATCH THE ENTIRE VIDEO BEFORE REPLAYING TO ACTUALLY TAKE ANY OF THE STEPS! You should note in his title it says, "3DS XL Top LCD Screen Replacement and Teardown Tutorial.: In other words, he's going to tear it down in its entirety first, then he shows how he removes the top screen for replacement - you do not need to take all those other steps if you're only replacing the top screen ;) Good luck!
