What are size and thickness of adhesive tape in iMac?

Hello, everyone!

I want to upgrade my 21.5 mac with SSD and RAM, but I'm far away from USA, so it's very difficult to get complete set of adhesive strips. I want to use some double-sided tape instead, like 3M tape, but I want to know sizes and thickness.

For example - can I use 6mm tape? Or I can use only 5mm? Same goes with the thickness - 3M provides many different tapes, do I need to use 0.4, 0.5, or 0.6 tape?

Any information welcome :-)

Sorry for possible mistakes, English isn't my native language :-)

Since the tape has to be custom cut to fit everywhere I highly recommend the ones provided by iFixit. I'm from Sweden but had no problem ordering the US kit online and had it shipped here.

If you are still going to try this yourself you will need a good cutting tool like the one provided in the tape-kit iFixit sells. The problem with using your own is that you might accidently input it too deep and damage the internals. A blade knife should to the trick.

The tape itself is really thin, though I couldn't say just how thin. I Think either .5 or .6 (that's mm, right?) would to the trick. Remember you need to make some breathing holes and don't forget to carefully remove the old tape from both the screen and the computer.

Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions, I took my iMac apart yesterday so I still have it fresh in memory :)
