How do I fix an HTC One with water damage?

My HTC One slipped into a bucket of water and after I removed it, it was still working. After about a half an hour it shut off and now it won't start back up or charge. Please help me out.

Well, I dropped my HTC One in a sink back in October. Went to the nearest HTC authorized Service Center to see if they could help. Even without asking what happened, they asked me to pay 1500 Rs. Just to check the device. I asked about the so called International Warranty that the Developer Edition device comes with and the answer was that HTC discontinued International Warranty in March while it sold me the phone in May 2013. Awesome!

k3sava, I am wondering if this is a question, a comment or an answer :-)?

oldturkey03, that was a comment. Sorry for ranting but HTC dropped the ball on the warranty there and I was frustrated. Seeing someone else having the same water damage on their device just brought it all back and I went into a rant.

Anyways, you guys at iFixit are a big help both in my personal and professional life... I work in technical support for mobiles... So thanks for all the great work. :)

plug it in to the charger for 10 minutes pull it off then hold the power and volume up button for around 30 seconds to a minute. Unless the board was damaged this should trigger a system reboot/reset you will lose no major data but will lose temporary files such as your last google search etc. I hope this helps.

i have the same prob too. but when i plugged in charger,my device on and off continously.

Kamran, the very first thing you want to do, is to remove the battery and no longer try to turn your phone, to charge or to sync it. Disassemble your phone, use the teardown for help with that./ Once you have it totally disassembled, clean all the parts with a high grade isopropyl alcohol. Check this guide for a proper procedure. Even so it was written for an iPhone, it should still be of some help to you. While you clean your phone properly, check for any missing, burned or otherwise damaged component. Check all your flex cables, clean the connectors as well. Once that is done, replace the battery and reassemble your phone. Then re-evaluate for any further damage. Remember that Rice is not going to clean your phone or prevent corrosion. Hope this helps, good luck.

Anyone suggesting rice, just so you know rice does not do much at all. It will not save your water damaged phone. You should follow the instructions oldturkey03 posted here if you want to actually get it repaired correctly. If anything, the rice will just leave starch behind with the rest of the minerals left from the water that will start to corrode the metal pieces in your phone. Just more of a mess to clean up so forget the rice. Get it torn apart and remove the battery and clean the phones parts with the Isopropyl Alcohol. Otherwise corrosion will slowly cause the components in your phone to fail. I have repaired a water damaged HTC One m8 that the person tried putting in rice for a week. When I disassembled the phone there was a descent amount of corrosion around the battery, the back side of the LCD, the LCD's ribbon cable, and vibrator motor just to name a few. which I cleaned with 99% Isopropyl alcohol. The battery was ruined and would not hold a charge of more than 2.8 volts which is not even close to the required voltage to even power on the phone. The LCD was ruin by the corrosion as well. I could tell she let this phone sit for a while(she said a few months) before bringing it in to be repaired. She also had an iPhone 6, so she wasn't worried about the htc getting repaired right away. A good cleaning with the Isopropyl Alcohol and a new battery and LCD/Digitizer got her htc one m8 up and running again and so far has not had any issues since the repair(about 3 months ago). So if you have water damage its best to cook the rice for dinner after you clean your phone with Isopropyl alcohol.

You should disassemble the phone and clean the logic board and cable ends and other parts that may be vulnerable to corrosion with isopropyl alcohol and a soft bristle brush, such as a toothbrush. Try to use isopropyl alcohol that is 90% or higher if possible. There are many instructional videos on YouTube and some guides on this site that can show you how to clean water damaged phones with isopropyl alcohol. I recommend buying a new battery too. The battery is usually the first thing to fail when water damage occurs. After you have done a good cleaning with the ISO alcohol try reassembling the phone with a new battery and try to power on the phone. If the phone powers on but will not display an image then you may need to replace the display.
