whirpool top loader won't agitate or spin, does fill and drain

Got an older Whirpool top loading washer (direct drive). Fills and drains as expected, but won't agitate or spin. The timer goes through the cycles as expected, and I can hear what sounds like a motor turning in there, but it doesn't translate into agitation or spin.

I don't think it's the lid switch as it does make the expected click, and it IIRC this washer will still agitate when the lid is open.

The other symptom is that I cannot turn the agitator with my hand. Or I can only turn it a little bit. Usually with the washer off I can turn it pretty well with just hand strength. Does this indicate a broken coupler or clutch?

Thanks for your help!

My maytagis doing that same thing but the tub is easy to turn

If the tub is easy to turn, you know the transmission is ok.

My Whirlpool top loader just quit agitating and spinning while I was doing a small load of laundry. It sounds as if something is slipping or a grinding noise like gears are slipping on each other. It will drain the water, but no movement.

I turned it over and the belt is still on, so I plugged it up and started it while it was laying on it's back on my porch.

The belt is not moving at all. There was a small dark black in color smudge of real thick grease or very heavy weight oil on the bottom of the motor.

Now I've had this Whirlpool top loader washing machine for 14 years without any problems whatsoever.

Can someone please help me figure this out and tell me what I need to check step by step. It's not an electrical problem or belt. What's the next thing I need to do ?

Thanks in advance for any help or information anyone can give me !

Sandys_dream07 i am going through the same problem with my washer but I think our problem is the clutch. Easy to fix when you get the part. Here is a video I found https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=andudl8IzP...

I feel compelled to tell everyone that I had the same symptoms, and after hours of agony on the published suggestions, I decided to remove the water pump, short the door switch, and see what would happen. I worked fine. The problem was a sock clogging and binding the motor. Everything works great with the sock removed.

Agitator Repair Kit

If the washer won't agitate this agitator repair kit may solve the problem. The kit contains the components that wear out over time. This is a relatively easy repair.

Drive Block or Bell

If the washer won't agitate the drive block or bell might be worn out or broken. The drive block connects the washer transmission to the agitator, if it's worn out the transmission shaft will still move back and forth but the agitator will either stay still or move slightly.

Door Lock Motor and Switch Assembly

If the washer won't agitate the door lock assembly should be checked. The door lock can fail either mechanically or electrically. Test any switches on the door lock with an Ohm meter. The switches should have continuity according to their design.

Door or Lid Latch Assembly

If the washer won't agitate the lid switch assembly might be defective. This is a very common problem. The lid switch assembly can fail either mechanically or electrically. Test any electrical switches with an Ohm meter for continuity. The switches should have continuity according to their design.

Motor Coupling

If the washer won't agitate the motor coupling might have failed. The motor coupling connects the motor to the washer transmission. It is designed to fail if the washer is overloaded in order to protect both the motor and transmission.

Drive Belt

If the washer won't agitate the drive belt might have worn out. Over time the drive belt will fail just from normal use . Replace the belt every two or three years depending on how much the washer is used.

Motor Control Board

If the washer won't agitate the motor control board might be defective. The motor control board provides power to the motor as well as direction and force. If the motor control board is defective the washer may not work at all or function properly.

U-Joint Kit

If the washer is won't agitate the U-Joint may have failed. This is the primary drive mechanism for the agitation motion in this washer. Although this is not a very difficult repair for a DIY'er with some experience, the part is expensive and so it may be worth considering a new washer.

Drive Motor

If the washer won't agitate the drive motor might be defective. This is not common. Check all of the other related parts to this symptom before replacing the motor. If the motor is visibly burned out or physically damaged it will have to be replaced.

Stator Assembly

If the washer won't agitate the stator assembly at the back of the washer tub might be bad or damaged. The rotor is essentially one half of a motor, it interacts with the tub by creating a strong electro-magnet. If the rotor fails or is damaged the washer might not spin or agitate. Check the rotor for damaged magnets or other defects.

I had the same problem. Washer fills and drains ok. won’t agitate or spin. I checked the motor (good), the capacitor (good), the shift assembly Good, the control board (good). Traced the wiring harness down to the motor. Found a broken wire that was in a harness clip near the motor. Spliced the wire, and now the machine works good. Hard to find the broken wire. Was taped and the tape was partially pulled into the wiring harness clip. Found the broken wire after I removed the tape (because it looked suspicious).

The gonkulator has a D C and E belt which the hybridelves fail to sluice sometimes. If there is any chance its that you should be able to fix it but if its not that it could also be one of gei Hel Mies and the trope causes. Good Luck

what about the capacitor? If the machine is filling and dispensing water but not spinning or agitating the starter capacitor will allow the motor to start and stop once the motor is running.

Check to see if there's any heavy weight oil leaking onto the motor.
