Abruptly Shorting Out... Passed All ASD Tests

Specs:

Macbook Pro

17-in, Mid 2010

2.53GHz i5

8GB 1067MHz DDR3

Intel HD 288MB

OS X.8.5 (12F37)

Summary:

Picked up this 17-in... which I still have a soft spot for (so very sad to lose the series. been looking to mod a case with new hardware-hackintosh). This mac randomly and abruptly shorts out. No power-off, no kernel panic, nada. Just shorts out. Sometimes it reboots (likely due to a system setting to restart after power-out).

In the past, I've had 3 issues I repeatedly encountered with models from this generation... loose cables shorting the MLB, a damaged HDD that only seems to be affect by "movement" that shorts the computer out, and a graphics chip issue that only seemed to be solved by replacement or reflow.

Before I get cracking... this model passed all ASD tests, with 2 exceptions under the HDD test family. It is SMART verified, but fails SMART attributes testing. Any ideas about this failure and the shorting out??

As always... thanks in advance for everyone's time. Cheers

PS - I am admittedly not a console expert, but I am literate. Didn't see anything out of the ordinary.

Jason

UPDATE!!!!!!

Ha!! That's some darn timing for you... Model just shorted out right after posting, and unlike before, a GPU kernel panic popped up in the console log. Looks like this is another GPU-related error. Re-flow/replacement time?? LOL

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff7f86629f1a): "GPU Panic: [<None>] 5 3 7f 0 0 0 0 3 : NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: CFG 0xffffffff 0xffffffff 0xffffffff, BAR0 0xb2000000 0xffffff80f5a6b000 0x0a5480a2, D0, P0/4\n"@/SourceCache/AppleGraphicsControl/AppleGraphicsControl-3.4.5/src/AppleMuxControl/kext/GPUPanic.cpp:127

UPDATE 2: Something tells me its a failing GPU chip after all... just failed, restarted and booted to a black screen. It's running (keyboard is backlit, functional, etc)... but no LCD output. Will have to test an external. Man this can be tedious sometimes :)

OFFICIAL APPLE DIAGNOSIS

(With a nifty little open-source software testing diagnostic) ... This macbook pro was determined to have a failing NVidia GPU, with the same errors/problems as officially noted for the 15.4" variety from the same generation with the same GPU chipset. Apple and I are working together to achieve a compromise despite it now being 3-years old. This is why I own macs...

Cheers,

Jason

You may think I'm nuts but try this first: MacBook Pro 17" Unibody Hard Drive Cable Replacement

Thanks Mayer - It's under $20, so worst case, I have an extra 17" 2010-1 cable for my use. I'll update you if it helps at all.

- de

My belief is that the cable just cant take all the 90degree bends. The 13 & 15" machine also have the IR and sleep sensors on the same cable.

Hey Mayer ---

While this advice didn't solve my issues with the 17-in, it did solve my problems for (2x) 2009 15.4" MBPs for which I had been having kernel panics galore (all across the board... too many to count). I figured I'd give the fix a try. Both of these 15's now run beautifully... put them through a stress tests for a day/ea to count the number of failures, panics, erros. Problems = 0 :) Thanks

J
