Home Button Clicks but doesn't work- ripped rubber

I replaced my screen by following the guide on iFixit. Everything worked perfectly except now my home button doesn't work. It clicks normally, but has no response on the phone. When I was replacing the screen, the rubber edge of one side of the button ripped off. The guide said explicitly to make sure this doesn't happen, but it was a really small part of the rubber. Is that little bit of rubber that tore off causing this problem?

Should I order a new button and replace my current one?

First go in and check the slot where the button locks into place on the inside of the phone.

Use the ifix guide for that model of phone to walk you to the home button replacement if you need to order a replacement flex cable there only a buck or two on ebay

I agree with the first answer.

I have found the home button to be notoriously unreliable on all iPhones and iPads

I agree with Gary, also to check the homebutton, you can disassemble the phone and bridge the homebutton receptor to see if it responds. This means having the phone on and disassembled at the same time.

Notice the two copperish things centered below the battery? Bridge those with something conductive, a screwdriver usually works and see if the phone responds. If it does replace the flex cable.
