Multicolor stripes after replacing screen

Replaced a cracked screen with a new one from iFixit. Thought I was a rock star when I plugged it in to charge and heard the familiar chirp and a low battery display. Let it charge overnight. Turned it on and now it gets any variation of colored vertical stripes depending how I swipe the screen. Rebooted, reloaded the phone, same result. Everything else works. True confession: I creased one of the digitizer screen ribbons during installation but after careful examination (looked ok), gently un-creased and installed correctly. I'm guessing I'll have to get another screen but why would it initially work then get psychedelic? Before a tear down, or replace the screen again, any other thought as to the cause?
