Error 6 when trying to restore with iTunes.

Hello Everybody,

I had a big problem here. My iPhone 3G 16gb cannot restore as it appeared a warning sign 'The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (6)'.

Can you guys help me? What happend to iPhone? There is 1 repair guy told me that my Logic Board is spoiled and need to replace.

Any advise?

Thank you,

Hairi - Malaysia.

This is usually caused by another program changing the default packet size for iTunes in a Windows environment. There is a troubleshooting guide that should fix the "Error 6" problem in iTunes.

could you explain what happend to the iPhone?

when you connect the iPhone with your computer - what happens?

does it make the connection sound?

does itunes pop up?

did you try to restore it with a "new" firmware like 3.1.3 or did you try that with a older version?

if the battery is charged - can you put it in DFU mode (click here for instructions)?

even if you don't see anything on the screen - when you try the DFU mode - the phone will connect and disconnect with the computer a few times.

i would restore it with an older version, most people try it with a 0 version - so 2.0 or 3.0 should be the choice (i revived a dead one with a 0 version - but to be honest - i didn't try a different one at first. there are a few pages on the net where you can find the firmware - like that

I'm having the same problem with my iPhone 3G 16gb. It's willing to restore to 3.1.3 original firmware, but when the bar is 2/3 full it shows the swirley thing and then reboots in DFU.

iTunes prompts with the message 'iPhone can not be restored (error 6)'

I can restore over and over, tried 3.1.3, 3.1.2, 3.1, 3.1.3 custom and 3.1.2 custom several times, on three windows machines (XP, Vista and Win7). Think I will try it at the local Apple store in a few days..

Tried upgrading my wife's iPhone 3gs to Apples new 5.1.1. and it kept failing with Unknown error 6.

Took the to Apple store and their so called "Geniuse" (completely useless) said the phone is dead and tried selling us a new iphone 3gs for £100.

We came back home and left the phone on charge and it we saw the charging sign after a while, a proof that it is to dead as the useless Apple staff said in store.

After hours of googling and countless restore I was unable to find anything solid. Even Apple has so many users complaint on this but they are not bothered to respond or come out with a fix, even though their upgrade is causing issues.

This is very dark as if Apple wants it can get rid of a line of iphones by sending out an upgrade which effectively makes the phone dead. Just my opinion.

At last, we installed itunes in a different (third) laptop, connected our phone and did a restore.

And it worked like a charm.

Try installing itunes in a new PC or laptop and do a restore, hopefully it should work.

Good luck
