Chin strap for the 21.5" 2012 iMac.
This casing strip aligns the bottom edge of the display to the rear housing unit. The lower VHB (Very High Bond (VHB) Strips attach to it. This holds the display in place.

The chin strap is beneath the bottom edge of the display, so the display doesn't rest on it. It seems intended to hold the EMI (electro magnetic interference) black strips that surround the inside of the iMac.

is it very necessary to have it? What would be the consequences of not having it on?
Results of not having it: leaning the iMac forward will allow the display to fall off. This can even happen when the machine is running hot and softening the adhesive. The result is the display cable get ripped loose and can damage the connectors.
Do you like replacing motherboards? If so, go for it.
