wont charge if plugged in and makes weird noise.

Hello!

I have a Black MacBook 13" with 2GHz Core Duo. I can power on my laptop and everything works (a little slower than usual). When I plug in my charger it makes a weird noise, there is a weird smelll near the keyboard (kinda like burnt plastic) and it wont charge the battery. It will only charge the battery if I turn off the laptop. The battery is new and charges fully when the laptop is off.

I used this laptop for about a year in Indonesia where there are crazy humidity levels. Now I live in Ecuador and the weather is cold and dry. I thought it might have something to do with that.

I'm a big fan of ifixit and have solved many problems with your help, thanks for your time!

Could be humidity. I would open the system up and see what is burning. I would recommend not using the system for now as you could make things worse.

I opened up the laptop and found no signs of visible burning... However the magsafe board does look like it has a tan or something lol. I removed the RAM and used a can of dust cleaner to clean the motherboard a bit. Could it be the magsafe board?

Also, even though it is a new battery when I charge it completely it will only last one hour. Then I plug in the charger but it starts with the weird sound and the small light doesn't go on. I have charged other laptops with this charger and they do fine. The fan seems to be working a lot and its very noisy too, more than the normal noise you would get from a macbook.

Sometimes the bluetooth and camera won't work but these are issues that don't bother me as much. Maybe they are symptoms of something else?

Looking at your pictures shows the bottom side of the keyboard with some staining which could be dust or soot. If it's soot that is often a sign of something has burnt (unless you live in a smoky house).

The Mag-Safe board is mostly passive so I don't think that was the cause (it could be damaged just the same). Does it look OK? Any burnt areas or is the plastic melted around the contacts? Otherwise I don't think its an issue here.

Your pic of your logic board looks OK on the top (given the limits of the image). You may want to go a little further here and look at the under side as well. In case the bottom got wet some how. Do you see any corrosion any where?

The charging circuit is located on the logic board just behind the Mag-Safe board. You can see the MOS FET transistors (four larger back chips with five contacts). Do you see any burnt areas around here on either side of the logic board?

As this point you may need a new logic board

For the Mag-Safe I dont see any burnt areas. I was taking the motherboard apart and I found that the heat sink and fan were very easy to remove, the thermal paste is dried out. Going though the steps i did notice that the battery connector has some white and green stains on the pins. I'll post pictures.

Well it looks like you got a little moisture (at least in the connector). Can you get the whole cable assemble out? If you can using a toothbrush and yes a little bit of toothpaste (mild abrasive) brush with a little water. rinse well, then shake out as much water and pat dry wait a good day to finish air drying.

The logic board connector will be harder to clean. Try using some wooden toothpicks (may need to cut them down a bit) a little white vinegar might cut though the green scum (copper oxide).

Sounds like you have a handle on the dried out thermo grease. I do hate cleaning it up ;-) its just so messy. Just get the good stuff to replace it.

The bottom of the board looks clean which is good news! Maybe the battery connector is all you need to deal with here - Crossing my fingers - Good Luck

Have you tried a different charger? If not, the problem could be: The magsafe board, the logic board, or the battery connector. It is most likely the magsafe board, due to the tan color on it.
