Just replaced the entire screen and when I turn it on it appears the backlight isn't working, so what could have caused this problem? I have tried a hard reset and restore but those haven't made any difference.

Put the phone in DFU mode and then do the software update. Warning: it would clear everything that you may have on the phone prior to update.

Have you tried to plug in the old screen see if it works?

the old screen was cracked and didn't show anything, that's why I replaced it (sorry should have mentioned that)

also to add: sprayed the iphone with an air duster on its contacts and the backlight seems to be working! I can't get bypass the passcode (bought it 2nd hand) so I can't restore it or change brightness settings
